James and the Giant Peach (1996)
I’m not the biggest fan of Roald Dahl stories. His work is far too creepy for children, in my opinion. Add in strange, Tim-Burton-esque Claymation, and James and the Giant Peach was far too dark for me to enjoy. This story merges humans with animals and bugs, and even though some of them are supposed to be kind, they’re drawn to be really scary. I can’t imagine any little girl liking this movie; it’s strictly for boys who like to play with spiders.
The titular little boy makes friends with a spider, ladybug, and centipede, all while living inside a giant magical peach. If you like Matilda and The Nightmare Before Christmas, you might like this one. But it’s definitely on the creepy crawly side. You might want to stick with the princess movies for your little girls. Boys, you’ll hear the voice talents of Richard Dreyfuss, Simon Callow, Susan Sarandon, Miriam Margolyes, Jane Leeves, Joanna Lumley, Pete Postlewaite, David Thewlis, Steven Culp, and Paul Terry as James.
