Jane Eyre (1970)
Those who are die-hard Jane Eyre fans probably won’t like this version. Much was cut out of the story, Susannah York was far too pretty for the title character, and George C. Scott wasn’t British. There were so many English actors who could have played Rochester at that time, so even though George was definitely gruff enough for the role, he didn’t put on an English accent. Susannah, though given an unflattering wig, was still made up to look lovely and got to wear pretty dresses. Where is the plain heroine of the page?
Those who don’t absolutely love the story, but who only tolerate it every once in a while because it is a classic and keeps being remade, won’t mind the 1970 tv movie. I don’t mind that Jane’s childhood, aunt, and cousins are eliminated entirely, St. John has very little screen time and a completely different personality than originally written, and that the social party with Blanche Ingram and the fortune teller is abbreviated. For me, I understand the criticism of a poor adaptation (as I am quick to point out in certain versions of The Great Gatsby), but I’m not the biggest Bronte fan to join that club.
