Journey to Italy (1954)
Journey to Italy is both natural and stylized. It has a definite European flavor to it, which tends towards melodrama and overdone emotions. But both Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders manage to convince the audience that they’re not really acting, that their true selves are coming out for the camera. Ingrid gets hurt feelings when George is cold towards her, and George has no respect for his wife as he flirts openly with other women.
The premise is simple, and you can easily imagine Roberto Rossellini scribbling his thoughts on a napkin the day before filming. Ingrid and George have a bad marriage, and they take a, well, journey to Italy. Ingrid thinks they can salvage whatever love they used to have, but George just wants to do his own thing with whomever he pleases. He treats her so badly, it’s a wonder why she wants to patch things up at all! He’s extremely cold, insulting, disrespectful, and acts like she’s just an irritating fly hovering in front of his face.
I really only sat through this movie because Ingrid looked so pretty and got to wear such beautiful clothes. I want her fur coat! Yes, she gives a fine performance, but this really isn’t an enjoyable movie to watch. Who wants to watch a bad marriage for ninety minutes?
