Julia's Cats: Julia Child's Life in the Company of Cats
by Patricia Barey and Therese Burson
If you don’t know who Julia Child is—or if your response to that query is, “She’s the Meryl Streep lady, right?”—you probably don’t know this tidbit about her life. Even people who know all about her cooking don’t know this: Julia Child had a love of cats.
This very short, wide-margined biography details the many cats Julia and her husband adopted over the years. It starts off as adorable as can be, but lessens as the pages turn. It’s obvious this big-hearted woman loved cats, but when her feline friends moved on, either to another home or to the hereafter—I’m not giving spoilers, but unfortunately cats don’t live forever—she didn’t seem devastated. Or maybe Patricia Barey and Therese Burson just didn’t write Julia’s feelings very thoroughly; the book did seem to scrimp on the details.
I’d skip this book if I were you, unless you really, really love Julia Child. And cats.
