Jumanji (1995)
In one of the most iconic children’s movies of the decade, Jumanji has stood the test of time remarkably well. Is it any wonder the recent remake didn’t do very well at the box office? No one wanted to stray from the original.
Kirsten Dunst, still an adorable child actress, and her brother, Bradley Pierce start off playing an innocent board game. It’s an exciting adventure game, but neither kid has any idea just how exciting it will get! When the game literally comes to life and insists they continue playing until the end, they face life and death danger. Robin Williams also comes to life as the board game’s safari guide, and he provides a reassuring “genie” presence to the audience that the kids are going to make it through alright. They’ll scream and fight off spiders, animals, and monsters, but he won’t really let anything bad happen to them.
In the supporting cast, you’ll see David Alan Grier, Bonnie Hunt, Patricia Clarkson, and Bebe Neuwirth, who gets to deliver the most hilarious line. She plays the kids’ aunt, and while she promises them a treat in the evening, she lets it slip that grown-ups need treats too: “I’ll get some ice cream. . .and bourbon.” If it’s been a while since you’ve seen the original, or if you’ve only seen the remake, it’s time for retro night.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to frightening scenes involving children and animals, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
