Keeping Mum (2005)
Everyone loves the idea of a perfect person not really having it all. In Keeping Mum, a pastor, Rowan Atkinson, with a perfect family finds his life is completely falling apart. His wife Kristin Scott Thomas is having an affair with her golf teacher, Patrick Swayze. His teenage children are having trouble in school and with their social lives. And when Maggie Smith shows up as the new housekeeper, she suggests remedies he finds difficult to swallow. But, like a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, sometimes the truth is hard to take.
Keeping Mum is very much a dark comedy. It shows a dysfunctional family that in real life would have no hope of pulling together, and it tries in ninety minutes to show that in fake life (the movies) they can. The humor is very British, so if you don’t like that style, pick something else tonight. And if you’re not in the mood for a family riddled with problems, try something sunnier until you’re ready.
