Keeping the Faith (2000)
Anyone in the mood to see a love triangle between a Catholic priest, a rabbi and a religiously neutral girl? It sounds like a bar joke, doesn’t it? I watched this movie when it first came out and found it extremely predictable. I gave it another chance when I was in college but felt the same way, and even wondered why I’d bothered watching it again.
When they were kids, Ben Stiller, Edward Norton, and Jenna Elfman were all friends. Life took them separate ways, but the two boys remained close through their adulthood. Now that they’re all grown up, only one thing can get between them. No, it’s not religion, even though they both obviously feel very strongly that their belief is the right belief. It’s a girl – of course! Each man has different obstacles standing in the way of his feelings for Jenna. Ed has his priestly vows, and Ben has an overbearing mother who doesn’t want him marrying outside his faith. Gee, what do you think is a bigger roadblock: renouncing the priesthood or making Anne Bancroft mad? This movie is so obvious, it shouldn’t even be classified as a love triangle. There’s absolutely no suspense, and the relationships Jenna has with both men are clearly based more on physical attraction than anything else.
