Key Largo (1948)
Key Largo has a large draw in the cast list, but it’s not my favorite of the Bogart-Bacall matchups. The main reason I don’t like it is because Lionel Barrymore is wheelchair-bound in this movie, and it’s very sad to see him belittled. Edward G. Robinson is the head villain, and he’s very mean to Lionel. Lionel has some tearful speeches and wishes he had use of his full strength so he could go toe-to-toe with the gangster, but since the audience knows he really needs his wheelchair, it’s pretty heart-wrenching to watch.
If you don’t mind seeing real life’s tragedy play out on the big screen, you can give this movie a try. It is very famous. Humphrey Bogart is a veteran who comes to stay at his buddy and war widow’s (Bacall) hotel in the Florida Keys. There is tension because he survived and Bacall’s husband didn’t, but their domestic squabbles are dwarfed when an evil gangster takes them all hostage. I prefer Eddie G in his more lovable roles, and this one is all-gangster, like Little Caesar. I don’t like rooting against Eddie G, but when he’s hurling insults and baiting an ill and elderly Lionel, I don’t have a choice.
