Kill Your Darlings (2013)
As if you couldn’t tell from the title, Kill Your Darlings is a pretty heavy drama. It takes place in the 1940s, focusing on the Beat Generation poets going to college and discovering themselves. If you don’t like that group of artists, you will not like this movie. (For that matter, you won’t like the 2010 biopic Howl either.) Daniel Radcliffe plays Allen Ginsberg, with a New York accent, a curly wig, and an attitude. Dane DeHaan plays troublemaker Lucien Carr, who proves to be a very bad influence on the young student. Drugs, promiscuity, deviance, and rebellion become the nature of his education.
The acting in this indie drama is very good, but is it really worth it? Does anyone really need to see the little boy who played Harry Potter and David Copperfield having anal sex? I’d argue that no one really needs to see that. Believe it or not, I had no idea what the film was about when I went to see it. I thought it was just a period drama with an odd title. Now I know better, and I’m sorry to admit it, but Daniel Radcliffe has chosen to be in too many weird indie flicks for me to blindly watch them anymore. I’ll either read a synopsis or watch the preview first next time.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to sex scenes and violence, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
