Kiss the Blood Off My Hands (1948)
With an A-tier cast of Burt Lancaster, Joan Fontaine, and Robert Newton, you’d think this dramatic thriller would be one of the classics, especially with such a tantalizing title as Kiss the Blood Off My Hands. However, it falls a little flat: sometimes characters are so stupid, it’s hard to root for them.
Burt stars as a man with a past and a temper. He accidentally kills a man in a bar fight, but for fear that he won’t be believed, he flees the scene. He breaks into a young, fragile-looking woman’s apartment, intending to hide out. Joan Fontaine makes her first mistake by believing in him so much she willingly hides an accomplice. Suddenly the thriller takes a romantic turn, but since there’s not much there to sizzle, it returns to the excitement. Burt leaves his hiding place (don’t ask me why) and gets into a fight with a police officer. He’s really on the run, now!
Robert Newton’s in this movie, isn’t he? You’re darn tootin’! He’s a seedy criminal who blackmails Burt into helping him with his next job. Trading one illegal act for another? Sometimes they’re just so stupid, it stops being entertaining. But give it a try for yourself and see if you like it.
