Lady in a Cage (1964)
Although it belonged to the genre of “cheesy 1960s thrillers starring 1930s A-tier actresses”, I found Lady in a Cage to be one of the creepiest. The main reason was because the bad guys wore nude stockings over their faces, and that always gives me the willies. Also, since it had such a simple story, it seemed more plausible than Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Olivia de Havilland merely gets stuck in an elevator and terrorized by a group of punks – seemed realistic enough to me.
James Caan plays the head bad guy (seriously, does he ever play a good guy?), along with his spacey girlfriend Jennifer Billingsly and sheepish punk cohorts. As he is a very believable villain, it’s easy to truly fear for Olivia’s safety. He doesn’t have any conscience in his eyes; she just might not make it through the end of the movie! Plus, as she tries to defend herself with only a cane through the bars of the elevator, it seems obvious she can’t win. Just take pity on her already – she’s Maid Marian!
Just because I named it as one of the creepiest doesn’t mean I’m giving it a recommendation. You have to really like the genre if you’re going to sit through one of these ’60s flicks. Chances are, if you are devoted fans of the leading ladies who lowered themselves to being in them, you don’t watch the movies. You respect their star status and stick to movies that let them keep their dignity.
