Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)
Is he getting too old for this s***? In Lethal Weapon 3, Danny Glover’s character is eight days until his retirement. He’s selling his house, and he doesn’t want any risks on the job to jeopardize a nice, comfortable pension. But with Mel Gibson as his partner, there are risks at every turn. Even when the guys get punished and sent to ticket duty on the street, they end up screaming at a man for jaywalking!
Mel Gibson is given a new love interest in this one, a fellow police officer who can give as good as she gets: Rene Russo. She’s given quite a few action scenes to show off her tough moves, and if that isn’t enough, she and Mel have a pseudo-seduction scene in which they take off their clothes to reveal various bullet wounds and scars.
These movies are so funny, and the characters are so likable (even with Mel’s scary rebellious streak) that it’s truly delightful to watch them. You feel a real camaraderie between the partners and friends, and a sense of family within Danny’s household. When they’re getting the house ready for a client showing (led by new realtor Joe Pesci, “okay?”), Danny’s wife, Darlene Love, refuses to let anyone have breakfast. “Wipe the fingerprints off!” she says, pointing at the refrigerator. Anyone who’s sold their house will sympathize with her, and anyone who’s lost a bid or client will cringe when Joe ruins the showing with full disclosure. He’s so funny, okay?
