Levity (2003)
If you like grungy, indie movies with deep messages and uncomfortable subject matters, you might want to check out Levity. It stars Billy Bob Thornton as a man who’s paroled after twenty years of a life sentence. This isn’t a story about an innocent man fighting for justice; instead, he admitted his crime and wants to pay for it. He killed a teenage boy and understands the damage he’s done to the boy’s family. Or does he?
While living in a boarding house run by Morgan Freeman, he tries to redeem himself by befriending the drug-addicted Kirsten Dunst and giving her guidance. And when he meets Holly Hunter, the sister of the boy he murdered, he doesn’t immediately introduce himself and beg for forgiveness. Instead, he hides his identity and actually becomes friends with her. If he truly understood how much he destroyed her life, he would stay as far away from her as possible. Obviously, this movie is a very heavy drama, with lots of plans going awry and more pain being delivered to people who have already lived through their share. I always appreciate Billy Bob Thornton’s acting, but I don’t really like seeing Kirsten Dunst in such a gritty role. Bring It On fans aren’t the target audience for this movie.
