Lipstick (1976)
Can I ask a question about Lipstick? Why would any parent allow their two young daughters (twenty-two and fifteen upon the film’s release) to act in this disturbing rape-centered film. Literally, the entire movie is about rape. Muriel and Margaux Hemingway play sisters, one a model and one interested in music. Muriel’s music teacher Chris Sarandon comes across as nice and sweet at first, but then he shows his true colors and rapes Margaux. Both sisters have to deal with their trauma after the rape, since Muriel walked in and witnessed it. So again, why would the Hemingways allow their daughters to be permanently psychologically damaged by acting in this movie?
In the supporting cast, Anne Bancroft plays the lawyer defending Margaux – I use that word deliberately, because the case quickly devolves into blaming the victim and accusing her of enticing Chris into consensual sex. Margaux is put on the defensive instead of being able to properly heal and see her rapist put behind bars. Anne is always a professional and adds class to her films, but I can’t really imagine why anyone would want to watch this movie. It’s very unfortunate that cases like this exist, even now fifty years later, but why traumatize child actors in the process?
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to rape scenes and upsetting scenes involving a child, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
