Little Caesar (1931)
Little Caesar is the movie that catapulted Edward G. Robinson to instant stardom. Nowadays, it’s just a regular old gangster picture, but back in 1931, it was particularly menacing. This new actor with his dark coloring, snarling mouth, and “Do it my way, see?” voice, he terrified audiences who were just getting used to talking pictures. His fan mail was flooded with letters from people who thought he really was a gangster in real life, and he was often threatened in the street. In his memoirs, he wrote of a sad situation where he knocked on a woman’s front door, and she screamed for her husband because she thought “Little Caesar” was going to attack her.
Again, when you watch this pre-Code gangster flick today, it’s not that big of a deal. It’s not even Eddie G’s best gangster flick. Brother Orchid is far better; The Whole Town’s Talking is very good as well. But if you like the genre and want to see its origin, or if you love Eddie G, you really should watch this classic. It’s almost 100 years old!
