Logan's Run (1976)
I’m not a science fiction fan, so imagine my surprise when I actually enjoyed Logan’s Run. It has all the earmarks of movies I normally dislike, but it won me over anyway. In a futuristic society, people are “sacrificed” at age 30. Everyone has a little gem inserted into their palms, and it turns a different color when one’s time is nearly up. Policemen are in charge of keeping order among the society of very irresponsible youths determined to live up every moment until it’s too late, and every once in a while, someone tries to escape the domed, indoor city and must be eliminated. Michael York plays a cop, and he believes in law and order. However, when he meets the rebellious Jenny Agutter, she plants the seed of doubt in his head. Perhaps there really is more of a word outside their city, a world where people can live to a ripe old age and don’t have to answer to a mysterious computer deity.
If you normally do like these stories, you’ll absolutely love this classic. It has some pretty iconic moments and is definitely reminiscent of the Fahrenheit 451, 1984, The Hunger Games-types of futuristic worlds. Despite everyone’s 1976 hairstyles, it’s pretty believable and stands the test of time despite the clothes and sets. It’s just one of those sci-fi classics that you can occasionally laugh at and mostly really get into. I loved seeing Peter Ustinov with all his cats, and I’m sure others will get a kick out seeing Michael Anderson Jr. and a pre-famous Farrah Fawcett in small roles.
