Looker
by Laura Sims
What a copycat of The Girl on the Train! A first-person unreliable narrator tells the story of her obsession with looking through the window at the married couple with a young baby across the street. The protagonist drinks too much, makes rash and stupid decisions, is admittedly unattractive, and obsesses over her ex-husband and the fact that they couldn’t have children. There’s a male character described as being Middle Eastern with a “wolfish” smile. It’s written in present tense, and there are brief sex scenes to grab the readers’ attention. Anything else?
I actually read Looker first, and I really enjoyed it. It was quick and funny, making me laugh at the narrator’s quirks and near-insanity risks as she tries to get her neighbor to like her. But, it still borrowed way too much from the famous thriller for me to fully compliment it. If you like this genre, you can knock this one out in an afternoon. It’ll make you laugh and keep you on your toes. I liked it better than The Girl on the Train, and the humor really helped.
