The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Origin stories are always the best, introducing the audience to a new world and new characters. The first of the six Peter Jackson movies that showed audiences far more of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world than they every would have imagined is lovely. Visually stunning, exposing a previously undiscovered area (also known as New Zealand) to the entire moviegoing community, with memorable music, unique characters, and endearing bouts of courage and loyalty that make you want to stick through the rest of the trilogy, this movie will be remembered by all who flocked to the theaters in 2001 to see it.
Everyone will have their own memories and favorite moments. “They come in pints? I’m getting one!” “What about second breakfast?” “Keep it secret. Keep it safe.” So many quotes that any kid of the ’90s will gladly rattle off as part of their complete childhood, but I’m pretty sure my brother and I have the same favorite moment: teasing our mom mercilessly for having a crush on Viggo Mortensen, whom we just thought (at the time) was “beardy and gross” – our exact words. With an incredible combination of Ian McKellan, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Sean Bean, Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, John Rhys-Davies, and of course Andy Serkis, you’ll soon associate everyone with their roles in this movie, regardless of how many others you’ve seen them in. Well, Sean Bean will probably always be “006” in my mind, but everyone else will always belong in Tolkien’s Middle-Earth.
