The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
In the final installment of the Lord of the Rings movies, you’re going to see a lot of fighting, killing, and dying. All the inaction from the second movie was piled into the third, making up for it – and then some. Fans of the series have been known to call this an “epic conclusion,” but it was a bit too violent for my taste and too many people were killed. I like origin stories better where new worlds are introduced, rather than conclusion stories where people and places get destroyed. But if you like special effects and want to see talking trees storming the castle, fiery blazes, cannonballs collapsing bridges, and tons of mythical creatures falling to their death, this is the movie to see it.
Even more memorable, as time has passed, than the epic final battle was the Oscar snub for Sean Astin. Remember how outraged everyone was that he didn’t get nominated for Best Supporting Actor? I’ll bet you can remember more details about that than exactly who fought and died, can’t you? Well, I can, and it just goes to show you that character development and good acting mean more, in the long run, than special effects and swordfights. But if your favorite part of the series is, “Don’t you know your Sam?” then you probably love the meaty acting scenes they give him in this movie.
