Love Crazy (1941)
Love Crazy gives you a description of the plot in its title: it’s crazy. It’s so absurd, it’s ridiculous – but in a good way. William Powell and Myrna Loy play a very happily married couple who go through a strange ritual on every wedding anniversary: walking four miles to the courthouse, rowing two miles across the lake, and returning home at exactly midnight. On a whim, they decide to do the ritual backwards, starting with eating dinner in reverse order, from dessert to soup. Right away, they’re crazy. Then, Myrna’s annoying and clingy mother, Jessie Ralph, shows up and derails them.
While in the elevator, Bill bumps into an ex-girlfriend, Gail Patrick, who has just moved into their apartment building with her new husband. The elevator stops, and Bill, Gail, her dog, and the elevator operator (Elisha Cook Jr.) have to make a daring escape through the roof. It’s a crazy story, one that Bill doesn’t feel like explaining to Myrna lest she get jealous. As if the evening isn’t complicated enough, Bill plots an escape from his mother-in-law by having “just one” drink with Gail – on his wedding anniversary! Why he does this is never explained, but when he still hasn’t returned after three hours, Myrna goes ballistic. And with good reason!
To get back at him, she phones Gail’s husband and plans for Bill and Gail to find them in an embrace when they finally return home – only she winds up in the wrong apartment. Half-naked athlete Jack Carson finds himself the object of Myrna’s seduction – when will the insanity end? The answer is, thankfully, never. Love Crazy is crazy from start to finish. How William Ludwig and Charles Lederer ever thought of the twists in their screenplay is beyond me. You’ll have to see it to believe it, but the twists and turns never cease. If you’re not a fan of the absurd, you’ll probably hate this movie, so just know what you’re getting into. It is the only movie where you’ll get to see Bill Powell playing his own sister, though, so that might be worth a viewing. In the supporting cast, Sig Ruman plays the head of the psych ward, Vladimir Sokoloff plays one of the chief psychiatrists, and Sara Haden is one of the nurses. Of course, Love Crazy features an insane asylum!
