Lovelace (2013)
How many of you out there went to go see Lovelace hoping for a fun, steamy movie night? It’s a biopic about Linda Lovelace, the star of Deep Throat, so it has to be a great choice for a group of girls enjoying cocktails and popcorn, right? It turned out to be a lot different than I’d originally thought, so if you just want a giggly good time, I’d recommend something else for this weekend.
Amanda Seyfried stars as Linda Lovelace, but through this movie she shows the audience that the 1970s icon didn’t have a perfect life. She came from a strict family and fell for the rebellious Peter Sarsgaard. Peter, most famous for playing villains, plays another realistic one in this drama. He exploits his wife’s sexual talents and forces her into the porn industry so he can profit from something that should have remained private between a married couple. In most unhealthy relationships, it takes two to tango, and as mean and abusive as he is, Amanda’s character enables him to treat her that way. And in most unhealthy relationships, when the abused decides he or she has had enough, the abuser doesn’t take it lying down.
If you want to giggle and get drunk with your friends, stick with The Full Monty. If you want to see the cute-as-a-button Amanda in a heavy drama about self-discovery, rent this one. Since it’s a period piece, you’ll get to see some outrageous hairdos, flashy clothes, and familiar faces—Sharon Stone, Bobby Cannavale, James Franco, Hank Azaria, Juno Temple, Chloe Sevigny, Wes Bentley, Adam Brody, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and Eric Roberts—rattling off outdated phrases.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to sex scenes, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
