Lydia (1941)
Since Lydia starts off when all the main characters are elderly, and they all haven’t seen each other in forty years, you know that it doesn’t have a happy ending. The bulk of the movie is told in flashbacks as each man describes how much he was in love with Merle Oberon, the title character. But since they’re all old and obviously didn’t end up with her, it’s very sad.
Merle looks as lovely as ever and is clad in beautiful gowns, but she blithely hurts these men as she refuses to marry them, and picks other men instead, and is selfish and momentary. Joseph Cotten is completely in love with her, but she hurts him terribly. She asks him to lie to her grandmother, Edna May Oliver (in her last movie), while she elopes with another man. How insensitive is that? Another admirer, Hans Jaray, is a blind pianist who writes an entire concerto for what he thinks she looks like. Her response: “But I don’t have blonde hair!”
She’s very pretty, but her personality really got on my nerves. It would have been enough to put me off Merle Oberon for future movies, but thankfully I remembered Wuthering Heights and cut her some slack. She’s awfully spoiled and self-centered, though. So if you don’t want to dislike her, skip this movie. It’s extremely sad, the love stories aren’t that great, and all you’ll get out of it is a very lovely theme by Miklos Rozsa.
