Mackenna's Gold (1969)
As most of you will find out, Mackenna’s Gold boasts of an all-star cast, hence its appeal. With Gregory Peck, Omar Sharif, Edward G. Robinson, Lee J. Cobb, Burgess Meredith, Anthony Quayle, Telly Savalas, Eli Wallach, Raymond Massey, Keenan Wynn, Julie Newmar, and narration from Victor Jory, almost everyone will want to watch it, right? You could sit through it, or you could save yourself two hours and a lot of boredom. This gold-digging western is hardly interesting and unfortunately has no one to root for. Everyone’s after a secret Mexican legend of a goldmine, some for good reasons and some for bad.
Even with the large cast, very pretty Arizona scenery, and a good director J. Lee Thompson at the helm, this movie just isn’t worth watching. I love westerns when they’re good, and I have little patience for them when they’re not. Part of the charm of western films is that they’re simple and don’t need a lot of dressing up. Mackenna’s Gold could have used a little dressing up, or a little dressing down – or something. Really, folks, you can save yourself two hours and just pretend you watched it. If anyone asks, you can say, “Oh yes, that was the Gregory Peck movie about the gold where Omar Sharif plays a Mexican bandit,” and no one will know the difference.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. There are some handheld camera motions throughout the movie, like during all the horseback sequences, or when Gregory looks around the desert. Also during the opening credits, the aerial shots swirl in a circle. And one more thing, there’s an intense flashing strobelight effect about twenty minutes before the end when they look directly into the sun, and it will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
