Made for Each Other (1939)
Anyone in the mood to see screwball comedy queen Carole Lombard in a drama? You can check her out in her Rag-winning They Knew What They Wanted or you can also see her in a romance with James Stewart: Made for Each Other.
In this one, Jimmy and Carole have a whirlwind courtship and marry after only one day. He’s so smitten with her, he completely forgot he’s expected to marry the daughter of his law firm partner. His mother, Lucille Watson, is understandably upset that he’s thrown his entire future away for a low-class dame, and she does little to welcome Carole into the family.
Jimmy’s character in this movie doesn’t have much of a backbone. He doesn’t stand up to his mother, he gets swept up in the moment and marries a stranger, and when he has a family to support, he doesn’t stand up to his boss Charles Coburn and demand a raise. This behavior causes some rifts in his marriage, but that’s what happens when you marry someone you don’t know! There are a lot more darker moments to this movie, so if you’re interested in seeing how Jimmy and Carole work it out (or don’t—no spoilers here!) rent this on a rainy afternoon.
