Man's Favorite Sport (1964)
It’s the middle of the 1960s, just before the psychedelic part of the decade takes over the culture and the cinema. The same year that Breakfast at Tiffany’s said goodbye to glamourous parties, Man’s Favorite Sport said goodbye to laughing at the nonexistent problems of WASP-ish suburbanites. Yes, movies still did it, but as the ’60s petered out, those movies got sillier and sillier until nobody wanted to watch them anymore. And we wonder why Doris Day retired.
She’s not in this one, though, but instead Rock’s love interest is the beautiful Paula Prentiss. Rock stars as a famous authority on fishing, dubbing it “man’s favorite sport”, but when he gets roped into a fishing tournament by Paula, it turns out he knows absolutely nothing about it. This movie is very silly, and it’s no surprise that Rock’s attentions quickly transfer from the river to man’s true favorite sport: courtship. If you rent this one, you can expect lots of pie-in-the-face gimmicks, sexual innuendos, and silly sound and music cues. It was made in 1964, after all. But with two beautiful people in the leads, you’re not really watching it for the storyline, are you?
