Marooned (1969)
Normally, I’m the first person to walk out of the movie (or just not go at all) if it’s centered around outer space. But for the sake of one of my celebrity boyfriends, David Janssen, I decided to rent Marooned, also starring Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna, James Franciscus, and Gene Hackman. It turned out to be so interesting and riveting, I didn’t need anyone to talk me into staying until the end. So, if you’re like me and don’t normally find astronauts or moon landings interesting, give this one a try anyway.
Three astronauts (Crenna, Franciscus, and Hackman) are sent up into space to work on a space station orbiting Earth. Their wives (Lee Grant, Nancy Kovack, and Mariette Hartley) wait patiently for them to return, but when their months-long stint is up, a terrible mistake occurs. The malfunction is major and potentially affects their return journey. Peck is the space director, Janssen is the head honcho astronaut who knows everything about the mission and what the three stranded fellows are going through. Can they figure out a way to bring them home safely, or at all?
The incredibly interesting screenplay keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Crenna in particular has a couple of great emotional scenes, and he’s very believable as an all-American astronaut. Hackman’s character is written to be horrendously irritating, so if this is the first movie you see of his, you’ll probably hate him forever. He complains, he seems inept and untrained, and at the first sign of trouble, he panics and puts everyone in danger. He’s an astronaut – he was trained for this! But I understand. There has to be someone in the movie who panics. Check this movie out, especially if you like Peck in serious, authoritative roles.
