Marvin's Room (1996)
Two sisters, as different as night and day, are forced to reunite under the worst of circumstances in the tearjerker Marvin’s Room. While one sister has given up her life in order to care for her bedridden father, Hume Cronyn, the other sister lives very far away and struggles to raise a troubled teenager. Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep play the estranged sisters, and a young Leonardo DiCaprio plays the wayward teen. There are very strong performances in this drama, but if you’re not in the mood for a movie about death and setting one’s affairs in order, pick something else tonight and save this one for when you need a cryfest.
Meryl Streep enjoys yet another screen transformation as she embodies her character, and from her entrance, you don’t see a two-time Oscar winner anymore; you see a woman who’s had to fight her whole life to scrape by, and she’s tired. She’s a gum-chewing tough hairdresser who wants a better life than she has and fears all the responsibility she’s run away from will soon catch up with her. Diane Keaton has also sacrificed her whole life to scrape by, but in completely different ways. Just as these are two ladies with different acting styles, their characters play on their own unique strengths. If you’re a fan of anyone in the cast (and keep an eye out for Robert De Niro, Dan Hedaya, Gwen Verdon, Cynthia Nixon, and Margo Martindale in the supporting roles) you’ll probably enjoy this well made staple of the ’90s.
