Maybe I Do (2023)
I don’t want to spoil anything about the plot, because when you watch Maybe I Do as it unfolds naturally, it’ll be one of the most enjoyable movies you’ll watch all year. It stars Richard Gere, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, and William H. Macy. They each hold different views of love and commitment, and their dialogues are written so well, you’ll find yourself persuaded by whoever’s talking at the moment. The younger pair in the film, Emma Roberts (yes, she’s Julia Roberts’s niece and absolutely adorable) and Luke Bracey, are considering a life change. Luke is happy with their live-in relationship; why change a good thing? Emma thinks “good” can be turned into “great” and wants to get married. When they turn to the four adults for advice, they get more confused than ever!
It was based off Michael Jacobs’s play from the 1970s, and while the script is so clever you can easily imagine it being performed on the stage, it doesn’t feel dated. I wonder why it took over forty years to take this charming comedy from the stage to the screen. Funny, witty, and so quick you’ll stay on your toes the entire time, Maybe I Do is one of the best comedies of the decade. In a modern era where sex and violence are turned into grotesque shocks, it’s so refreshing to find a movie that is clean yet still relevant.
