Meet the Parents (2000)
When I went to the theaters with my family to see Meet the Parents, I was only a kid. Most of the humor just wasn’t accessible to me, and I saw it through a child’s lens. I didn’t see anything wrong with a relationship being reevaluated because your boyfriend doesn’t get along with your family. It seemed perfectly reasonable that the woman’s parents would be as tough as possible on who might be their future son-in-law. If he’s going to join the family, raise their grandchildren, and be responsible for their daughter’s safety, security, and happiness for the rest of her life, he should fill more criteria than just making her heart beat faster. And finally, as a little girl, the most memorable part of the film was the “gag” about replacing the lost cat. No ten-year-old girl who sneaks her kitten back into the house after everyone’s gone to bed could laugh at a situation like that.
However, I realize this movie is a modern classic, and that everyone else in the country loves it. If I saw the movie again as a grown-up, I have a funny feeling I’d still side with Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner, rather than sweethearts Teri Polo and Ben Stiller. I’m still devoted to my cats.
