Midnight in Paris (2011)
If you haven’t seen Midnight in Paris yet, don’t talk to anyone about it. You can watch the preview, because thankfully it doesn’t include any spoilers, but don’t read any reviews or analysis. There’s a special magic to the movie that needs to be experienced without any warning. All you need to know is it’s one of Woody Allen’s best films, and it feels infinitely more scripted than most of his others. It has a fantastic story, a timeless theme that can spark an endless debate between you and your friends, and a terrific cast.
Owen Wilson is a struggling writer on vacation in Paris with his fiancé Rachel McAdams. She’s spoiled and shallow, and he’s more, well, like Woody Allen. He’s insecure, he overthinks things, he delves into existential topics, and he’s far happier listening to an old Cole Porter record than schmoozing at a cocktail party. But Rachel is so adorable! I just love her in this movie, from her classy clothes to her hilarious delivery and imitable expressions.
There’s really no way to know for sure, but the entire cast had such a great chemistry you can imagine they had a real blast making the movie. There are times when you get so immersed it’s as if you’re not even watching a movie, but instead just watching a group of friends hang out at a party. There are some definite “Woody Allen moments” that are quite charmingly sprinkled in, contributing to a few of the cutest cameos ever. To see Marion Cotillard, Tom Hiddleston, Michael Sheen, Allison Pill, Corey Stall, Kurt Fuller, Nina Arianda, Mimi Kennedy, Kathy Bates, and Adrien Brody all together in one movie, watch Woody Allen’s absolute gem.
