Morning Glory (1933)
I have absolutely no idea why Katharine Hepburn won an Oscar for Morning Glory; it might be the stinkiest movie she ever made. And since I sat through Mary of Scotland, that’s quite an insult. Maybe the Academy got confused and thought they were giving her an award for Little Women, which was also released in 1933.
In the film, Katharine Hepburn plays an aspiring actress. Yes, it’s one of those movies. She believes she’s destined to be on the stage—so in other words, she’s an idiot. She has to dodge casting couches and backstabbing actresses, all while trying to prove that she’s actually talented enough to land a part. Of all the backstage movies that show how hard it is to make it in show business, this one is ridiculous. It focuses more on the love triangle between Kate, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Adolphe Menjou than any real trials she faces in her quest to become an actress. Even if you’re a die-hard Hepburn fan who wants to see her in the movie that won her her first of four Academy Awards, I urge you to rent Little Women instead. She doesn’t do any acting in this one.
