Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
The same reason I didn’t like Mr. Deeds Goes to Town is no surprise: the reporter character ruined it. While it’s a cute rags-to-riches story for Great Depression audiences to escape in, there’s a female reporter who plans to exploit the main character by writing about his lifestyle. She goes undercover, lying about her identity to endear herself to her, but in the process of double-crossing him, she falls for him. Plus, she’s Jean Arthur.
Gary Cooper stars as the title character, and while I don’t normally like him and would have preferred someone else in the movie, he’s not the one who ruins it. Jean Arthur is her usual irritating self, turning every inch of comedy into screwball and making herself as unappealing as possible. Why would a new millionaire with the world at his fingertips fall for a conniving reporter?
