Mr. Woodcock (2007)
Seann William Scott stars as a successful self-help author who has mastered the art of letting go. He’s transcended his traumatizing past, or so he thinks. When his mom, Susan Sarandon, tells him she’s getting married, he finds out he’s not as evolved as he previously thought. It turns out, she’s going to marry his old gym teacher, Billy Bob Thornton. Billy Bob was the biggest thorn in Seann’s side when he was a kid; he can’t let his mom marry someone so mean and hurtful to children!
As you can guess from the title, this movie is a bit raunchy – and more than a bit silly. There are fistfights, embarrassing speeches, and more than a few comedy bits that people could never get away with in real life. On the serious side (I’m stretching it to even claim there is one), I liked that the film showed that everyone has two sides. The bestselling author without any demons has actually painted his house instead of exterminating the termites. The selfless mother thinks it’s time for her to have a little happiness, even if her son doesn’t approve of her choice. And the bullying teacher in school is capable of romance and love. Perhaps he was just trying to “make men out of the boys”, or perhaps he’s sweet-talking Susan and doesn’t mean a word. You’ll have to watch this light comedy to find out.
