Mrs. Miniver (1942)
Hands down, the best scene in Mrs. Miniver is a symbolic one. Greer Garson, the title character, is an English woman left alone to keep the home fires burning when her husband, Walter Pidgeon (of course), joins the service. The war literally breaks down her door when a lone German soldier finds his way through the back door of her kitchen. She’s frightened out of her mind, and it’s a tense struggle as to whether she should shoot, try to capture, or just release him. He is an enemy soldier, but he’s just a boy, after all.
The rest of the movie isn’t that tense, and I don’t really know why it became so famous. The major plot involves a local floral competition – I’m not kidding. Dame May Whitty, the patroness of the county, has won the contest every year, but will Henry Travers, a lowly gardener, finally usurp her? If you’ve watched the first season of Downton Abbey, you already know the answer to this question. The subplot involves Greer’s son’s impending marriage to May’s granddaughter, Teresa Wright – once again, not very interesting. The backstage story is far more dramatic: Greer and Richard Ney, the actor who played her son, got married after filming completed!
There are a couple of very famous scenes from Mrs. Miniver, and it has made it on countless people’s must-see lists. If you like classic cinema, by all means, rent it. It won’t hurt you, and it’s not even a bad movie. I just think it’s overrated. I don’t think it’s the best war-at-home movie out there. Since You Went Away and This Happy Breed are far superior.
