Murphy's Romance (1985)
James Garner’s television career gave him far more opportunities to be a dramatic actor than his roles on the big screen. Still, he was given a few opportunities to act in Hollywood, in Mister Buddwing, 36 Hours, and The Children’s Hour. And yet, the one and only Academy Award nomination of his career came from the extremely silly romantic comedy Murphy’s Romance. Thankfully, he was rewarded with multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his tv dramas; maybe he was able to just laugh this one off.
Sally Field plays a cute-as-a-button divorced mother who worries she’ll never find love again. But with that ’80s shag and those highlights, it’ll be no problem at all. She really is a cutie pie, which is why her ex-husband, Brian Kerwin, won’t leave her alone. Their son, Corey Haim, would love to see his parents get back together, but Sally has another gentleman caller: James Garner. A little older, a little wiser, and with plenty of advice to help the clueless gal muddle through. Which fellow will she pick? For a very light evening, which will inspire you to either take a vacation in the country or get a feathery ’do at the salon, watch this chick flick.
