My Man Godfrey (1936)
I know My Man Godfrey is a famous classic, but I just don’t like it. Given that it’s a staple among the screwball comedy genre, it’s no wonder I don’t like it! But if I’ve seen the remake with David Niven (my favorite) and still hold the same opinion, that speaks volumes.
Decades ago, rich people used to play scavenger hunts at their parties. With a partner and a list of items that will very difficult to find, the guests set out to be the first to return from their hunt. Carole Lombard brings home a homeless bum, William Powell, in answer to the item “the forgotten man” and wins the prize. Then, in an impulse, she offers him employment as the family butler. Instantly, the scruffy Bill is transformed with a shave and a tuxedo. He’s the Bill Powell we all know and love! Carole is her usual screwball, scatterbrained self, and her fans will probably love her in this classic. If you liked this one, check her out in Nothing Sacred. If you didn’t like this one, check her out Vigil in the Night.
