My Old Lady (2014)
My Old Lady is really awkward. The title, and the quirky preview, will lead you to believe it’s a quaint, charming French comedy, but beware. It gets awkward. I rented it because of the cast. Everyone loves Maggie Smith, and I love hearing both Kristin Scott Thomas and Kevin Kline speaking French. While you will get to hear some of the beautiful language, and see some great on-location shots, the plot itself is pretty complicated and will take up most of your attention.
Destitute Kevin travels to Paris intent on selling an apartment his late father left him in his will. It turns out, due to confusing French laws, he can’t sell it. Maggie Smith exercises her complicated “squatter’s rights” and refuses to budge from the apartment, since she and Kevin’s dad were in a relationship. She and Kevin decide to share the living space until he figures out what to do, and in the meantime, he meets her intriguing daughter, Kristin Scott Thomas.
I won’t tell you any more than that, but if the wheels in your head are already turning, you’re probably on the right track. I found it entertaining because of the cast, but the story itself was just too strange for my taste.
