My Sister Eileen (1942)
Rosalind Russell is at her comic best in the classic My Sister Eileen, one of the only screwballs that made me laugh and laugh until I couldn’t laugh anymore. She and Janet Blair play small-town sisters who move to New York City in search of fame and fortune. Janet is the pretty one who makes idiots out of men as soon as she looks at them, and Roz is the smart, stable one with a frugal finger and a determination not to run home with her tail between her legs.
Disaster starts as soon as they step off the train, and with their limited resources, all they can afford is a terrible rented basement above the subway with a window view of people’s feet as they walk the streets. Their landlord, George Tobias, is a typical, cynical New Yorker, and their neighbors are as varied as they are strange. Roz and Janet befriend everyone, and while it may seem that sometimes they get taken advantage of, it just shows how sweet they are. You just can’t help but root for them. You love Roz because she’s got sense, and you love Janet because she doesn’t mean any harm.
Meaning harm or not, Janet causes lots of trouble because of her appeal. When Roz finally finds a man she can talk to and form a connection with, the handsome, intelligent Brian Aherne, will Janet inadvertently steal him from her as well? Will Roz finally claim a man for herself, or will everyone fall for her sister Eileen? Go ahead and rent this adorable, silly comedy to find out. You’ll have a great time (especially with a surprise visit from three adorable comic heroes),, and if you have a prettier sister, you’ll get even more laughs out of it. Next up, rent the musical version from 1955!
