My Summer of Love (2004)
Emily Blunt hopefully considers herself very lucky; after My Summer of Love, she could have easily been typecast as villains or relegated to exclusively lesbian roles. As it is, she has played her fair share of snotty or bad girls, but those parts aren’t all she’s offered. She can certainly play a baddie, though!
In this British flick, Natalie Press plays a loner with low self-esteem. She dreams of excitement, so she’s easy prey for the more experienced, wild Emily Blunt. They strike up a friendship, and Emily pushes Natalie out of her comfort zone. Natalie also has a brother, Paddy Considine, who’s a religious fanatic. And in Hollywood, religious fanatics are only shown if they’re going to go too far and snap, right? So, when his sister becomes attracted to forbidden love, Paddy certainly doesn’t approve.
There’s really no reason to watch this indie flick unless you want to see Emily Blunt take off her clothes. There are probably more people than not who, with that disclaimer, will rush off to rent this movie, but that’s really all you’ll get out of this movie. There are no haunting characters, no poetic dialogue, no totally original story that will make you recommend it to all your friends.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to nudity and sex scenes, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
