Ned Kelly (2003)
If you’re particularly interested in Irish rebellion history, and you don’t mind extremely violent movies, and you’re not solely going into this one because you have a crush on Heath Ledger, you stand a chance at liking Ned Kelly. Heath plays the title character, but he’s not banking on his looks in this one. Stick with Casanova, because this one is so upsetting, it’ll take a while before you’re able to forget it.
For most of the movie, Heath sports a ridiculously fake beard that looks like the spirit gum’s about to pop off. You’ve got to laugh. If you don’t laugh, you’ll be forced to pay attention to the violence and disturbing death scenes; and who needs that? There were so many awful violent sequences, I ended up fast-forwarding much of the second half of the movie. There’s only so much a person can take. If you are going to sit through this whole movie, don’t get attached to anyone. You’ll see Orlando Bloom and Joel Edgerton as Heath’s like-minded pals, and Naomi Watts as his love interest. Geoffrey Rush plays the police chief, but he isn’t given anything to do except remind the audience that three of the five leads in this Irish movie are actually Australian.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to violence and upsetting scenes involving animals, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
