Never Goodbye
by Adam Mitzner
Make sure you read Dead Certain before you pick up the sequel Never Goodbye, because if you don’t, serious spoilers will be ruined. This book picks up when the first left off, and as the surviving sister is trying to get a handle on her grief, another tragedy strikes.
It was remarkable how well author Adam Mitzner wrote a first-person female protagonist in Dead Certain. So often, male writers just don’t understand the female mind; they create women who only process one situation or emotion at a time. In Dead Certain, both women were multi-faceted and juggled emotions and thoughts constantly. Never Goodbye continues the realism. The heroine is in therapy, simultaneously trying to move on and not forget. She feels duty and pity towards her father, but she also has to live her own life. Add in a new relationship, and she really doesn’t have any more room on her plate, does she? That’s the time when life usually strikes, and another unexpected death shakes up the plot.
Reading an Adam Mitzner book is like getting an education. As someone who doesn’t live in New York, I learned an awful lot about the state’s legal procedures. Mitzner always explains carefully but without a condescending tone. Full of secrets, surprises, and intelligent characters, this series is not to be missed.
