New York, New York (1977)
Goodness, where do I start? New York, New York doesn’t have anything wrong with it on paper, so you might be tempted to rent it. But, please, for the love of God, if you don’t like it in the first half hour, don’t sit through the following two hours. You will regret it and wish you’d had that time back. It’s a simple love story about a saxophone player and a singer after WWII. They have personal and professional ups and downs, all culminating in Liza Minnelli’s signature, showstopping, titular tune. I’m not trying to spoil anything, but if you’re just renting the movie for the song, fast-forward to the end (or just look it up online). Some of you might be shocked to learn that “New York, New York” wasn’t even nominated for an Academy Award. What does it take?
If this were the first Robert De Niro movie I’d ever seen, I would do anything in my power to never watch another one. He was so endlessly irritating, I felt like screaming. If I met him in real life, I would probably literally run away from him. I might even move out of the city and change my name so he couldn’t find me. Self-centered, obnoxious, egotistical, cruel, pushy, bossy, and slimy, it’s hard to fathom why Liza Minnelli allows him in her life. She must have extremely low self-esteem to believe she deserves such treatment. Their two-hour argument is tough to watch, in part because it doesn’t appear to be following a script. It’s easy to imagine director Martin Scorsese telling them, “Fight, okay? Action!” and letting the camera roll. Why a screenwriter or editor wasn’t employed, I’ll never know. Why Scorsese didn’t film more takes (or, dare I suggest, rehearse beforehand?) so the amateur improvisational feel to the scenes could be worked out with practice, I’ll also never know. It literally feels like you’re watching a theatre workshop improv exercise.
This movie is enough to ruin a girl’s faith in the male species, so I urge you to exercise caution before renting it. It’s quite torturous. Liza’s songs are very entertaining, but you can just watch those clips online if you want to see her fantastic energy and showmanship. It’s no wonder “New York, New York” was her signature song; it will have you rising to your feet for a standing ovation at its conclusion. For the rest of the movie, though, you’ll either be sitting on your hands or using them to cover your ears.
