Night Flight (1933)
When a polio epidemic breaks out in Rio de Janero, the medicine has to be flown overnight from Buenos Aires by expert pilots. The pilots are Robert Montgomery and Clark Gable, with their respective girls waiting nervously for their safe return. Clark is married to Helen Hayes, who prepares a lovely dinner and melodramatically eyes the telephone constantly, fearing he’ll crash in the inclement weather. Bob is a playboy who admits his unfaithfulness to his latest girl, who drives him to the airport after a night on the town. He’s still in his tuxedo when he gets his pilot’s gear on, and while she makes a crack about trusting him, he answers back, “You shouldn’t!” He admits there’s a girl in every port, and she drives away alone, dejected.
Robert Montgomery’s cuteness and cad-ness aside, this is a drama. John Barrymore is the head honcho planner of the medicine delivery, and he tries to tone down his usual theatrical performance. He’s strictly the airport director in this one, and it’s very funny to see him try to pull it off. He’s still John Barrymore to me! Speaking of Barrymores, Lionel makes an appearance as an equally nervous, rash-scratching inspector, who fears the medicine won’t make it in time.
Everyone fears the medicine won’t make it in time, so hopefully the suspense will travel through to the audience. I wasn’t in any particular suspense, and this isn’t a movie I’ll want to watch again. It’s very dated and stylized, and I’ve seen so many better movies from the same time period, this one was rather disappointing.
