Night Passage (1957)
If you’re in the mood for a mediocre 1950s western because you’ve seen all the good ones starring Randolph Scott, you can pop in Night Passage and do the dishes while you’re watching it without missing anything. James Stewart is an ex-railroad man entrusted to smuggle a large payroll through when notorious bandits tend to rob the train. Jimmy has a colorful past himself, which is why the head honchos think he’ll sneak by under the radar of Dan Duryea and his sidekick Audie Murphy. Poor Dan Duryea, the blond bad guy who preceded (and was replaced by) Richard Widmark. In the 1950s, he still cranked out the movies, but he wasn’t as big of a name. In this movie, he’s just a stereotypical outlaw, and he even gives a little giggle reminiscent of Dick’s famous laugh.
The one great part about this movie is that it’s one of the only movies you’ll get to hear James Stewart singing, which is a real treat. He’s no Howard Keel, but I like his voice. It’s small and sweet, and it makes you feel cheerful like Fred Astaire. He sings quite a few times throughout, and it’s enough to carry you through to the end. The rest of the movie just isn’t very good. Don’t let it give the entire western genre a sour taste in your mouth. Pop in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral or Hondo for a superb representation.
