No Escape (2015)
As much as I wanted to see No Escape in the theaters, I’m so glad I didn’t. When I rented it and watched it as a weekend matinee with my dad, I was scared out of my wits. This movie was so intense! If Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan weren’t the leads, I probably wouldn’t have sat through the movie, but who can say no to two cutie pies?
When Owen Wilson, his wife Lake Bell, and their children go to an anonymous Asian country because he’s received a job transfer, they find themselves in the middle of a political upheaval. It’s very jarring and frightening; one moment the kids are enjoying the swimming pool at the five-star hotel, and the next, rebels break in and start shooting everyone execution-style. Owen and Lake are very convincing in their levels of panic and need for their family’s survival. This doesn’t feel like a Hollywood thriller. It’s so raw, it feels like some news cameras filmed a real coup.
If you think you can handle this thriller, it’s very well done. It’s not a feel-good movie, and it doesn’t sugarcoat anything. A good rule of thumb would be if you watched The Impossible and Not Without My Daughter, you can handle this one. The bonus is that you’ll get some eye candy while you’re cowering behind a pillow.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to violence and frightening situations involving children, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
