One-Eyed Jacks (1961)
“You may be a one-eyed Jack around here, but I’ve seen the other side of your face,” had been quoted so often in my household that by the time I actually saw the movie from which it came, I doubled over in laughter. It’s not a particularly funny phrase, and the scene itself is dramatic, but somehow Marlon Brando’s delivery reduces me to giggles.
The story is a timeless one of friendship gone sour. Marlon and Karl Malden play pals who rob a bank together. Surrounded by Mexican police, they decide to split up – only Karl double-crosses his friend and rides off into the safe sunset knowing Marlon’s going to get arrested. The rest of the movie, Marlon plots his revenge and tries to find Karl so he can get it. In the supporting cast, you’ll find Ben Johnson, Katy Jurado, Slim Pickens, Ray Teal, Elisha Cook Jr. and Philip Ahn.
This movie has a bit of behind-the-scenes sadness attached to it. Marlon Brando directed the picture, and the difficult ordeal took a toll on his health. His director’s cut version was far longer, and naturally the production went overschedule and overbudget. A directorial debut is overwhelming to anyone, let alone the star of the film itself. The audience was able to see a very private struggle up on the big screen: Marlon gained weight and was unable to control it. His speech also changed in the mid-1960s, sounding like he was in enormous pain and could barely get the words out. So, while you’re watching this two-and-a-half hour western with criticisms at the tip of your tongue, have some pity.
