Only Angels Have Wings (1939)
It was popular in the silver screen to make movies about daring pilots, and since they all pretty much follow the same pattern (reckless daredevil paired with a sweet, stable girl who wishes he would leave his adventures behind and settle down), you can pick your cast and start from there. If you want to see Cary Grant and Jean Arthur, you can check out Only Angels Have Wings. It’s not a screwball comedy, but is in fact, quite heavy on paper. I’m just really not a Jean Arthur fan, so had a better dramatic actress taken her place, I probably would have valued the movie more. The other woman who threatens to take Jean’s place in Cary’s heart is Rita Hayworth, whom I’m not also not a fan of. If you do like the cast, I’m sure this is worth a watch.
You’ll see lots of familiar faces in the supporting cast, namely Richard Barthelmess as Rita’s husband and old flying partner of Cary’s, and Thomas Mitchell, Cary’s pal with a heart of gold. Sig Ruman, Allyn Joslyn, and Noah Beery Jr. are also in the movie. If you like this one, try Test Pilot with Clark Gable and Myrna Loy.
