Penthouse (1933)
If you’ve never heard of Penthouse but you like the whodunnit genre, you’ve got your next weekend matinee picked out. It’s a very exciting forgotten classic, and far more interesting than some of the more famous murder mysteries to come out of the 1930s. Warner Baxter had great energy, timing, and presence. Had he not died prematurely, he could have continued to have a successful career as a middle aged man, even as the likes of Errol Flynn replaced him in the swashbuckling roles.
Warner plays a lawyer who repeatedly defends guilty folks and gets them acquitted. His pal Nat Pendleton is a powerful gangster and a frequent client. I loved seeing Nat in this fun role. It’s hard to think of him as a tough murderer when he seems like such a softie, but if you’re used to seeing him in the Dr. Kildare flicks, you’ll get a big kick out of seeing him in Penthouse.
But back to the story: Warner’s girlfriend, Martha Sleeper, breaks up with him. She’s got someone else on the side, so she immediately calls him. Meanwhile, as a thank-you for his latest trial outcome, Nat sets Warner up with a good-time-girl, Myrna Loy. Myrna’s very cute, and her character’s a bit naughty in this movie. She immediately agrees to go back to Warner’s apartment for a nightcap after they’ve just been introduced – and she ends up spending the night!
Somewhere along the way, there’s a murder, and Warner races against the clock to find out who did it. I highly recommend this cute drama if you’re tired of watching the same old crime movies. The Thin Man has nothing on Penthouse.
