Pork Chop Hill (1959)
I recently read in a Gregory Peck biography that he was very proud of Pork Chop Hill, but that the director, Lewis Milestone, wasn’t happy with the end result because he felt the studio cut other scenes in favor of highlighting the headlining star. Looking back, I can see Milestone’s complaint. There were several minor characters that I could tell were given more character development but were practically cut off mid-sentence as the camera returned to Gregory Peck. Ironically, I felt Peck’s performance was the weakest part of the movie. In his war pictures, I was never convinced of his military experience, unlike Errol Flynn, who was able to put across his complete capability despite his lack of service in real life. As Peck charged up the hill and ordered directions to his men, I got the feeling he had no idea what he was saying or doing.
The rest of the movie is excellently directed. With explosions, tension as the Americans realize they’ll never take and keep the hill – and no reinforcements are coming to help them, and night fighting that’s made even more dangerous when an unexpected spotlight illuminates the soldiers, you can tell this is the same master who helmed All Quiet on the Western Front. But I still would have liked to see more of James Edwards, Woody Strode, George Peppard, Rip Torn, George Shibata, and the others.
