Portrait of Jennie (1948)
Was I the only person disappointed by Portrait of Jennie? This movie had so much hype, and when I finally rented it, I thought of so many different paths the story could have taken rather than the simple route it did. The great mystery wasn’t so great, and it could have been.
It’s always wonderful to see the dramatic Jennifer Jones with everyman Joseph Cotten, so if you’re on a quest to watch all four of their pairings, don’t forget about this one. Joe stars as a struggling painter who has a random interaction with a young girl. He’s inspired to paint her, and he’s drawn to her enthusiasm and warmth. The next time he sees her, she seems to believe much more time has passed than actually has, and the way she talks, it’s as if she’s been waiting for her to reappear in her life. Joe feels the same way, that his inspiration lasts in between visits, and just when he longs to see her again, she appears. See what I mean about a great premise potential?
I kept hoping more twists and characters would get tied in, especially since so many well-known actors joined the supporting cast. Ethel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Cecil Kellaway, Henry Hull, Felix Bressart, and David Wayne all could have been tied in to the mysterious plot—only it wasn’t that mysterious. I love Jonesy so I’ll watch any of her movies, but this one’s not my favorite. If you did enjoy this slight mystery, check out another Jonesy-Joe pairing in Love Letters.
